CLEVELAND, Ohio — Activists are demanding that Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley’s office follow the lead of progressive local prosecutors in other cities around the country and ban his prosecutors from requesting cash bails for low-risk, nonviolent defendants.
A dozen organizations sent an open letter to O’Malley on Tuesday asking him to “protect the poor from the ongoing human rights crisis at the Cuyahoga County Jail,” where nine deaths of inmates of the county’s jail in the last 14 months and a November 2018 report by the U.S. Marshals found inhumane conditions inside the jail.
