Support Union Workers at the Cleveland Film Festival

Cleveland Jobs with Justice has recently been made aware of a very disturbing work issue involving one of our members, IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) Local 160 with Playhouse Square, and the Cleveland Film Festival (CIFF). The projectionists thought it would be business as usual for them when CIFF moved the film festival to Playhouse Square. However, that is not the case. Playhouse Square informed the Union that CIFF would be supplying their own non-Union projectionists to run the films during the festival. Playhouse Square management is pointing to a clause in the contract to explain their actions, even though past practices of using the Union projectionists at special events prove differently.

As a sponsor of previous workers’ rights films, we find it both disheartening and ironic that Playhouse Square and CIFF are ignoring the rights of workers here in our city. Both Dan O’Malley, Executive Secretary of the North Shore AFL-CIO, and I have reached out to Playhouse Square and CIFF without success; that is why Cleveland Jobs with Justice is calling on our community to take action on behalf of the IATSE Local 160 members.

If you are an organization sponsoring a film this year, please pull your sponsorship and let CIFF know why you are taking this action. Please stop promoting the film festival until we get this issue resolved. Again, please let CIFF know why you are taking this action.

As an individual, please do not support the film festival this year. If you have already purchased tickets or a season pass, please cancel those and ask CIFF for a refund, letting them know that you are doing this to support the members of IATSE Local 160.

Below is the statement released by the North Shore AFL-CIO and a link to a petition that you can sign to support the projectionists. We will continue trying to resolve this issue before the start of the festival and will keep you updated with any news. Thank you for showing your support by standing in solidarity with IATSE Local 160!
